I am a writer and abolitionist primarily covering the intersection of the criminal legal system and the arts.

In order to combat certain extractive practices of journalism, I aim to do the following: pursue co-reported stories with writers who are currently or formerly incarcerated, conduct more "As Told To" essays that hand the direction and content of the story over to impacted individuals themselves, and, at minimum, ensure articles no longer use dehumanizing language like "inmate," "felon," and "convict.”

Too often and for far too long journalists have profited off of the ideas and stories of people impacted by the criminal legal system. This must be rectified. The next crucial intervention within media work is figuring out how publications can allocate stipends to said impacted individuals when they are interviewed.
